Absent Next Few Days

I will be traveling over the next few days for Amanda’s birthday.  I will be going to Cocoa Beach, FL and Cape Canaveral to go to Kennedy Space Center this weekend and then I will be driving back home and then driving back up to Orlando for the Roche Summit on Tuesday.  So basically I am driving 3 hours north, then back home, wait a day, and then drive 3 hours north again.  Kind of redundant, but Amanda has to work so I can’t just stay up there.

Since it is her birthday weekend, I will not be on Twitter or Facebook or blogging or anything.  I disconnect myself, or at least try to as much as possible.  So if you send an @reply to me or an e-mail, I probably won’t get back to you until Sunday night or Monday morning.

Have a great weekend everybody!

Meal Planning to Lose Weight

Yesterday I posted about how I am starting to log all of my blood sugars again.  That is not the only thing that I am logging.  I am also starting to log the foods that I am eating as well.  Meal planning and logging my foods helps me lose weight.  I am trying to keep my calorie intake to 1,200 calories a day.  I know that sounds like very few carbs, but I have done it before and I can still get all the nutrients that I need.  In order to keep track of how many calories that I am eating, I have to log everything.  You don’t really realize what you are eating until you right down every thing that goes into your mouth.  It also helps me stop eating things on the go and just random chips or cookies or something that I shouldn’t be eating.

Eating healthier like this does require some mental toughness for me because I am used too eating so much food that when I eat a normal meal, I get hungry a few hours later, so I need to create small, healthy snacks.  My favorite healthy snack is to have cucumber slices with a little french onion Lite dip.  It is healthy, and its under 75 calories, can’t beat that for a snack.

The items that I keep track of in my log are the type of food, calories, carbs, fat, and fiber.  Bottom line is that 1 pound is equal to 3,000 calories.  So if I cut out 3,000 calories from my diet, I lose one pound.  I tend to eat a low calories, high fiber diet.  I don’t cut down too much on the carbs, it just comes naturally.  Basically, if something has a lot of carbs, chances are it’s going to be high in calories also, so if I eat low calorie foods, the carbs will be cut as well.

Here is a picture of a normal, new lunch for me.  It consists of 9 grain sandwich thin, 2 slices of ham, 2 slices of cheese, mustard and 1 cup of salad with fat-free dressing.

What are your favorite snacks?

Podcast Friday’s On Hold

Last week I mentioned that I will be posting a podcast every Friday.  This is going to put on a hold for a few more weeks.  There have been some scheduling conflicts over the past couple of weeks that have not allowed me to get good, quality material to post.  This will most likely begin after I get back from the Children with Diabetes event at the end of the month.

For now, it is time to go watch Team USA.  Have a great weekend everybody.

Weird Words How People Found My Blog

A few weeks ago I was running my monthly Google Analytics reports from the many websites that I manage.  I usually don’t look too much into the stats for this site because it is simply a personal site and the number of readers and subscribers doesn’t mean more money I make, unlike the other sites that I manage.  But I decided to take the time to look at some of the keywords that were bringing people to my blog.  Below is a list of the top 8 keywords that brought people to my blog and a short explanation of how I THINK it happened, and questions as to why and how people are even coming up with these search phrases.

Top 8 Keyword Searches

  1. Recent Misleading Store Ads – this one is pretty simple.  I had a few posts about how CVS was printing an ad that advertised a certain test strip on sale for a box of 25, but yet not a single store even had it in stock.
  2. Diabetic at Pei Wei – this one is a little weird.  Maybe someone was thinking of eating Pei Wei and they wanted to see if other diabetics ate there?  Not too sure, but I did find a Fired Up Friday post about places not having many drink options for diabetics.
  3. I am Diabetic and I still love to eat a lot? – Well, this one doesn’t make me feel too great about myself if that is how people are finding my blog.  I have a lot of posts on here about my weight though and my journey of trying to lose it.
  4. Is my life over when I am diabetic? – Short answer, NO, it’s just beginning!
  5. sexhollywood.blogspot.com – Ummm….ok?
  6. “Submit a guest post” – money – seo – Looks like somebody was trying to make some money off of my guest posting week.  No shame in it, submitting guest posts is great for SEO purposes, but I would expect a phrase like that on my business blog, Chris Stocker Inc, and not on here.
  7. Chick fil a diabetic – Ok, this one just weirds me out, sort of like the Pei Wei one.  Once again, I think the only post it could be about is the limited drink options.

So, these ones weren’t that bad, but there was about 1,000 other phrases, but these ones were just the most common out of them all.  What are some of the funniest / weirdest keywords you have had people enter your site through?

Big Plans for June

Over the last week or so I have not been very active online at all.  Every so often I do this on purpose to just take a break.  There are times that I am just on the computer way too much and miss out on a lot of fun things and time with friends and family.  There are things that I can’t stop doing on the computer, such as my work, but things like blogging and tweeting and reading blogs is what I am able to cut out for about a week or so.

I’m still here and doing well though.  My blood sugars have been pretty normal, some highs here and there, but nothing out of the normal.  Actually, right now while I am typing this my blood sugar is the highest it has been in a while, 397.  I think it was a little high before I went to bed and I went to the bathroom a few times in the middle of the night.  So I did the non-smart thing and just bolused for 10 units at about 3:00 a.m. without testing because I could tell my blood sugar was high (kids don’t try this at home).  10 units to you may seem like a lot, but to me, it’s nothing.  I’m on a 4:1 carb ratio, and my correction is 1 unit for every 8 “points” off of my target BG.  See why I go through one reservoir every day and a half?

Today is the start of a new month, and it is a big push business wise for me starting today.  I have some big goals set for the month of June, both health wise and business oriented.  Health wise, I plan on eating smaller portions and exercising a bit more.  Business wise, I plan on taking on 5 new clients. (Remember, I donate 10% of my contract price to JDRF or whichever you charity you choose).  With these 2 main goals, it is going to be hard to work them together.

The more clients I take on, the more time a day I need to spend on them.  So that means less sleep and less time to cook healthy and to exercise.  I hate having to be on a schedule, but I think it is the only way that I am going to get things accomplished.  I normally have a list of things to get done in the day, but no particular order or time to get it done.

Well, I am working on getting all the posts together for the guest post week that starts next Monday.  If you submitted a post, I will be sending you a DM or e-mail this week letting you know what day that your post will be up.

Have a great day.

Drop Dead Fred – Drop Dead Diabetes

Last night I watched the movie Drop Dead Fred.  The reason that I watched it was because my girlfriend and her brother were talking about old school movies that they liked and this movie was mentioned.  I vaguely remembered any of the movie, just a few parts that when they happened I said, oh yea I remember this part.  I was a young kid when I saw this movie, probably around 10 or so and I know I liked it, I just couldn’t remember why.  Now I remember.  That movie was so perverted and so dirty in language, that as a kid, I thought it was awesome that people were saying those words.

If you have never seen the movie or don’t remember, the girls imaginary friend, Drop Dead Fred, makes her do a lot of bad things.  As she gets older he starts to do things that ruin her life and she starts to hate him.  But at times, she realizes that he is there to stay and she just needs to live with him peacefully in order for things to be right.  Sort of sounds like something that we all have in common huh?

Except, it is not imaginary, it is real.  Diabetes makes me do things that I don’t like to do, like test blood sugar, take shots, get low and scare people that love me.  I know I am going out on a limb here to compare the two things, but use your imagination.

What movie character would you compare your diabetes to?

Please comment, or @reply me on Twitter.  I’d love to know.

Did I Mention I Hate Moving?

Moving is fun, but it also sucks at the same time.  I was in a living situation over the last few months that wasn’t very convenient.  I moved out of the townhouse I was living in for over a year back in December and moved into my girlfriend’s house for what was supposed to be about a month or two until the condo they were looking to purchase was closed on.  However, there was a huge mess with it being a short sale and after 90 days, the bank declined the offer so the search was started all over.  Finally my girlfriend’s brother, my roommate, found a condo and he just closed on it 2 weeks ago.  I moved about 90% of my stuff into the condo over the weekend, but I have some stuff still left at my girlfriend’s house.

Here is my dilemna.  I have all of my diabetes supplies still at my old house and nothing at the new condo.  I don’t know exactly what day I am going to start sleeping at the condo so I don’t know when to take all my diabetes supplies over.  I can just take a few supplies over to the condo for now and leave the rest here for now, which is what I will probably do.  The other night when I was over there moving things in and organizing them, my site started to leak and I didn’t have any more infusion sets over there, so I had to come back home to change it and not finish what I wanted to finish.

Well, it’s time to get back over there before some meetings I have later tonight with clients.

Have a great day.

Few Questions for the DOC

My diabetes guest post week is going to be starting next week.  Diabetes Blog Week was so good and there were so many people participating that I had to take all of last week off of blogging and catch up on all the reading.  I also had some serious work to catch up on, but it seems that as soon as I catch up on work, it creates more work, hmmm… anybody else feel like that?

I have a couple questions that I’d love to get your feedback on.

First, I sent out a tweet the other day about a diabetes referral resource.  I want to know if anybody is interested in using something like this.  Basically, this is how it works.  I will create a web page that has all of your links with information on what you do.  Let’s say that you are a graphic designer, or you are a plumber, we would all referral our DOC buddies to the person looking for the work.  Of course we don’t all live by each other, but we all follow people on Twitter from across the world, so I’m sure we come across possible leads for everybody.

Secondly, if you still want to submit a guest post, just send it on over to me.  I’m still collecting them now.

Finally, please take the poll on the right side of my poll, I am going to post the results later this week.

Have a great day.

Diabetes Blog Week Day 7 – Wish Upon a Star

The first day after the cure would be, weird.  I think that is a pretty good word to sum it all up.  The first thing that I would do is open up my supply cabinet and take a garbage bag and start throwing all that junk away.  I would not keep a single thing to remind me of diabetes, because I have enough memories of it already, so I don’t need anymore physical memories.  Next thing that I would do is probably go and buy the largest Carvel Ice Cream cake out there and just dominate it, like seriously do work on it and finish the whole thing.

I would also go to the beach and run full speed into the water without having to disconnect anything.  I can just run right in and that’s it.  I’d probably fill the insulin section of my fridge with non lite beer and drink some think lager with extra carbs in it.  May as well just easy a pound of pasta while I’m drinking that beer as well.

Other than that, not much else would change.  I try to live a normal life as is now, so I feel that I wouldn’t actually need to change much.  I would just eliminate all the testing, and injections and filling up reservoirs.  Other than that, I think I would do things close to the same.

Finally, I would wake back up and realize…it was all a dream, I was just in the Matrix and now it’s back to reality.

Guest Post Week – Date Change

I mentioned last week that there will be a guest post week starting May 10.  I am going to change the date because I love Karen’s idea of the Diabetes Blog Week and want to be able to participate in that as well.  So I will simply be moving the guest post week back a week starting May 17.

If you would like to submit a guest post, just use the contact form on my blog and I’ll give you any details you may need.

No specific subjects, it’s whatever you want to blog about and just have it to me by May 16.

Thanks all.
