This is another post in my series of posts about Powering Through the Extraordinary with my agreement with Duracell and Accu-Chek. As I mentioned in my initial post about the series, I wanted to talk about the daily events that pop up in the life of being an entrepreneur with Type 1 diabetes and being able to power through those struggles or high stress levels.
As with any area of business that you may be in, entrepreneur or not, meetings can take up a large amount of time. There is preparing for the meeting, thinking about the meeting, going through the actual meeting and then handling the follow up of the meeting afterwards. Client meetings for me can become very stressful, especially when it is a new potential client. As the person who writes the checks for the business, if these meetings go south, it can be bad news for the company. This obviously causes me a lot of stress.
I had a client meeting the other day and had to meet at Starbucks about 15 miles away from my house, no big deal, leave 30 minutes before and get their in time and be fine. Well, diabetes got in the way, just a little bit. I had to stop before I left and have a nice little Capri Sun and granola bar to bring my sugar back up and get on the road to the meeting. The traffic that I hit on 95 heading to the meeting was not real fun either. Now, I’m about 10 minutes late, my blood sugar is hovering above 90, but I’m stressed out, so I know it’s going to tank soon, what do I do before the meeting?
This is when I thought to myself, how do I get through the next hour without diabetes affecting this meeting? How can I power through this diabetes moment and get through the meeting without sweating and getting light headed and losing the deal with the client?
A quick check with the Accu-Chek Nano that I travel with and in to Starbucks to buy a Sweet Passion Iced Tea and I knew I would be good to go for the meeting.
45 minutes later my blood sugar was above 120 and I had a happy client leaving Starbucks.
**Disclosure: By agreeing to participate in this program Duracell will provide me with batteries and Accu-Chek will provide me with test strips for a month. In return, I will post several times in the month of June about powering through several stressful moments.
I’m 15 years old. I got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the beginning of the year. I take insulin injections. My question is if I eat dinner righjt now & take my insulin for how much carbs I’m eating for dinner but then I want to eat desert 30 minutes after, can I take another shot of the insulin I need for the desert if it’s 30 minutes after I already took for my first meal?
